I have had the good fortune of working in state-of-the-art specialized depression in-patient hospital psychiatric departments and private clinics since the 1980s. It was in those settings that I learned the art of working with people who are experiencing all phases of depression, and how to truly help them out of the hopelessness and helplessness that is the desperation of depression. I worked under great mentors; doctors that came from the National Institute for Mental Health, dedicated psychologists who taught me how to do various group therapies, as well as brilliant nurses and social workers who were a delight to work among.
For my Master’s thesis, I focused on depression research by piloting my own study and creating a new depression scale as the result. To expand on my research findings, I wrote a workbook on strategies to cope with depression. Since then I have had the privilege of attending workshops and working with such therapy greats as RET theorist Albert Ellis, DBT founder Marsha Linehan, Insoo Berg’s protégé Terri Pichot of Solution-Focused therapy, and the author of Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, John Gray.
